Parental involvement in sport..

I always remember my Mum yelling at me from the side of the swimming pool when I was younger and swimming for my club. In the end, my instructor had to tell her to back off and just let me swim!

What are everyone else’s thoughts on this topic? I can’t says that Mum’s involvement was “detrimental to social-emotional development” - but I can see how pressure from parents could end up effecting a child’s participation in sports.

The Obesity Epidemic in New Zealand

• One in four adults (aged 15 years and over) were obese (27.8%)
• 44.7% of Maori adults were obese
• 57.9% of Pacific adults were obese
• There has been an increase in obesity in males from 17.0% in 1997 to 27.7% in 2008/09
• There has been an increase in obesity in females from 20.6% in 1997 to 27.8% in 2008/09

During middle childhood:

  • pyhsical growth slows.
  • physical skills are easier to learn;
  • bodies are larger and stronger;
  • motor co-ordination has improved.

These developments are all due to increased muscular, skeletal and neural development.

An older child will be able to throw a ball further than a younger child, and because of their superior hand-eye co-ordination, they will have a more accurate throw.

quite irrelevant, but I wanted to share the rainbow cupcakes I made for Mother’s Day!!

Ages and Stages - 4 Year Old Development

Ages and Stages - 4 Year Old Development

Heard on the radio yesterday while I was driving home from work, that New Zealand is the 4th best country to be a mother.

Here also, is an article I found on the New Zealand Hearld website:

It is great that we have the support of networks like Plunket (www.plunket.org.nz) to provide support for new mothers.

accbri:

My husband and I found this shirt for my middle daughter on our first vacation together. We were still dating at the time, so he had limited exposure to the truths this t-shirt held. He simply chuckled. It now belongs to our 2 year old who has become very comfortable saying “mine!”. I don’t hear as many chuckles now.

executivegroup:

70% of abused children turn into abusive adults.

So very sad.
